MI5 has issued an urgent warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) following the discovery of multiple attempts by Chinese spies to “recruit and nurture” individuals within the Westminster circle.
According to Security Minister Dan Jarvis, Chinese intelligence operatives are masquerading as companies or external recruiters to entice MPs, Lords, and Parliamentary personnel. These spies are reportedly using LinkedIn profiles under the guise of two fictitious women to gather sensitive information.
Addressing the House of Commons, Mr. Jarvis informed MPs of the recent espionage alert issued by MI5, cautioning about the continuous targeting of British democratic institutions by Chinese operatives.
Emphasizing China’s eagerness to obtain valuable information, Mr. Jarvis stated that individuals with access to sensitive data about Parliament and the UK government are being actively sought after. He highlighted that a group of Chinese intelligence officers, often concealed through front companies or external recruiters, are behind these operations.
Beyond parliamentarians, Mr. Jarvis urged vigilance among parliamentary staff, economists, think tank employees, geopolitical consultants, and government officials who have all been identified as potential targets due to their networks and connections to politicians.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has already engaged with her Chinese counterpart, making it unequivocally clear that such subversive activities will not be tolerated. Additionally, the government is set to implement measures to combat covert political funding and address foreign interference concerns.
In a communication to lawmakers, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle underscored the Chinese Ministry of State Security’s (MSS) efforts to establish contact within Westminster. The MSS aims to gather intelligence and establish long-term relationships using professional networking platforms, recruitment agencies, and consultants acting on their behalf.
The alert specifically named two individuals, Amanda Qiu (BR-YR Executive Search) and Shirly Shen (Internship Union), as operatives using LinkedIn to represent China’s MSS. The MI5 alert highlighted the MSS’s objective of collecting sensitive UK information for strategic advantage, outlining typical tradecraft and methodologies employed by a highly active group of officers.
Mr. Jarvis disclosed plans for a £170 million investment to enhance the sovereign-encrypted technology used by officials and an additional £130 million to bolster the UK’s defenses against threats posed by nations like China.
