A nursery teacher, suffering from illness, tragically caused the death of her partner’s four-year-old daughter by sitting on her in the bath until she drowned. The teacher, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, committed this heinous act due to an unsettling motive. Hughes, who had been left alone with the child while her partner attended a job interview, was deeply upset that he did not bid her farewell, suspecting him of infidelity.
Expressing her distress through disturbing messages, Hughes confronted her partner about his actions before carrying out the brutal attack on January 23, 2023. She placed the young girl in the bathtub and sat on her until she met a tragic end by drowning. Subsequent investigations revealed that the child had been sexually assaulted prior to her death.
During the trial at Johannesburg High Court in South Africa, Hughes admitted to having borderline personality disorder at the time of the incident but claimed awareness of her actions. She explained that an argument with the child’s father over alleged infidelity triggered the event, exacerbated by his requests for her to stop contacting him. Despite the child becoming unresponsive, Hughes left her unattended in the tub with the water running.
Following the murder, Hughes attempted suicide multiple times. At her sentencing, she attributed her behavior to a troubled upbringing and mental health struggles. Despite her remorse and expressions of regret, Judge Richard Mkabela deemed her actions as premeditated, citing text messages that indicated her intentions.
Hughes and Elie had initiated their relationship in 2021, with Hughes moving in with him and the victim. Testimonies revealed a tumultuous relationship with Hughes making repeated threats against the child. Hughes was convicted of premeditated murder and rape, receiving a life imprisonment sentence. Elie, the victim’s father, expressed that no punishment would suffice for the loss he endured.
In his statement, Elie lamented the absence of true justice for his daughter’s death, emphasizing the profound impact of the tragedy on his life.
