Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to deliver a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France next month, as confirmed by his office on Wednesday. During his visit, Carney plans to engage with European Parliament members to enhance the relationship between Canada and the European Union for the mutual benefit of their citizens.
Prior to his speech, Carney will also attend the State of the European Union address, a significant annual event delivered by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This move by Carney comes in the midst of Canada’s trade tensions with the United States, following the breakdown of recent trade discussions between Ottawa and Washington over the weekend.
In the past year, Canada has secured various partnership agreements with the EU, including becoming the first non-European member of Security Action for Europe, which offers substantial loans for defense expenditures. A spokesperson for the European Commission emphasized that Carney’s upcoming visit underscores the strong bond between Canada and the EU, signaling a commitment from both sides to elevate their partnership.
Amidst criticisms from Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman, who questioned the timing of Carney’s overseas address, the importance of fostering global relationships in the current challenging geopolitical climate was highlighted. Strengthening ties with international partners is deemed crucial for both Canada and the EU.
