“Robin Williams’ Children Revive Instagram to Preserve Legacy”

Must read

Robin Williams’ children have reactivated their late father’s Instagram account to combat the proliferation of unauthorized AI versions of him. Williams passed away on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63, with an autopsy revealing he suffered from Lewy body dementia.

In a recent post, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their desire for the Instagram account “therobinwilliams” to be a trusted space reflecting their father’s genuine legacy. They emphasized the importance of sharing his talent and humor authentically, aiming to honor his remarkable life and work.

Throughout his illustrious career in film, television, and theater, Williams achieved fame for his roles in various iconic works. From his breakout in the TV series “Mork & Mindy” to acclaimed films like “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Jumanji,” his versatility captivated audiences. Notably, he earned an Academy Award for best supporting actor in “Good Will Hunting” and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin.”

The resurgence of Williams in AI-generated videos has sparked concern, with clips surfacing online showcasing him in different scenarios. OpenAI’s Sora app, known for its video creation capabilities, played a role in producing these AI likenesses. However, following public backlash, OpenAI discontinued the app in March due to misuse involving prominent figures like Williams.

Zelda Williams, an actor and director, has been vocal against AI recreations of her father, denouncing them as disrespectful and contrary to his wishes. She recently utilized her father’s Instagram account as a platform to combat the ongoing issue of AI exploitation, emphasizing the importance of preserving his genuine presence amidst the digital landscape.

While some individuals, like actor Matthew Lawrence, have expressed interest in reviving Williams’ voice through AI, they acknowledge the necessity of obtaining the family’s consent for any such project. Similarly, Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has condemned the unauthorized use of her father’s likeness in AI applications.

Moreover, the emergence of AI representations extends beyond Williams, as demonstrated by the upcoming film featuring a digital version of the late Val Kilmer. Kilmer’s estate approved the replication and is set to receive compensation for the AI portrayal in the movie.
