The head of the sole anti-war party in Russia has affirmed his commitment to staying in the country and advocating for change, despite escalating pressure from authorities resulting in the party’s disqualification from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling excluded the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko, meaning “apple” in Russian, from the September vote. Nikolai Rybakov, the party leader, indicated that the decision was driven by authorities’ unease over the party’s resonating call to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of the widespread public support over the court’s verdict, citing a vocal demonstration of hundreds of backers outside the court echoing their disapproval. Formerly a prominent liberal voice in parliament and a government critic, Yabloko now holds only a few regional seats without representation in the State Duma, which is predominantly controlled by the Putin-backed United Russia party. The upcoming election will appoint members to the 450-seat lower house, with United Russia expected to maintain its dominance. Despite this, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would pose a stronger challenge if permitted to participate.
Yabloko is currently appealing the Supreme Court’s decision, which stemmed from allegations of undisclosed campaign support from Western entities, among other accusations that the party refutes. Rybakov, a 47-year-old opposition figure, affirmed his decision to remain in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and legislation during wartime that has prompted many dissenters to leave or face legal repercussions for expressing anti-war sentiments or other forms of opposition.
Public sentiment against the war is challenging to gauge due to strict government restrictions on dissent, but data from the Levada Center revealed a decline in support for the Russian armed forces’ actions in Ukraine. Rybakov highlighted Yabloko’s concise manifesto advocating for peace and a democratic Russia, attracting a surge of new supporters and underscoring a substantial segment of society eager for an end to the conflict. The party leader emphasized the resilience of millions who share their views, despite attempts to suppress Yabloko through coercive measures.
Social media platforms have been abuzz with videos endorsing Yabloko, showcasing individuals holding apples as a symbol of support or engaging in dances to Russian tunes referencing apples, rather than overtly political messages.
