Starmer Condemns Attacks on Streeting Amid No10 Chaos

Must read

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has strongly criticized the “unacceptable” assaults on Wes Streeting following a failed attempt by No10 to quash threats to the Prime Minister’s position.

Supporters of the PM launched a preemptive attack aimed at thwarting a potential challenge after the Budget, cautioning that Starmer would resist any move to depose him. However, the scheme, primarily targeting the Health Secretary, ended in a major setback.

Chaos ensued on Wednesday when Streeting denounced the “toxic environment” in No10, with one MP likening aides to characters from a popular TV show. Starmer was compelled to publicly distance himself from the attacks in Parliament, throwing his support behind the Health Secretary, lauding his performance.

Starmer affirmed, “Any assault on a Cabinet member is wholly inappropriate,” emphasizing that he never sanctioned negative briefings against his top team. The PM’s spokesperson later stated, “As previously stated, any unauthorized briefings against Cabinet Ministers will be addressed.”

The spokesperson reiterated the PM’s full confidence in his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, despite some MPs attempting to attribute the briefing to him.

Streeting vehemently denied allegations of planning a coup against the PM in a media appearance before a significant NHS speech, labeling the rumors “self-defeating” and originating from individuals excessively influenced by a TV show.

Critiquing the “toxic atmosphere” in Downing Street, Streeting urged for the dismissal of those responsible for the briefings. He criticized the derogatory language used against Labour MPs and condemned the counterproductive behavior of undermining a team member striving to deliver promised changes.

The dispute arises amidst concerns among MPs about Starmer’s struggles to improve Labour’s polling figures amid a rise in support for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. It also coincides with Rachel Reeves’ imminent pivotal Budget announcement expected to include substantial tax increases.

Labour MPs expressed frustration over the decision to fuel speculation about Starmer’s future, with one MP deeming the episode disruptive to the party’s image of stability and competence. Another MP criticized the PM’s team, likening them to characters from a satirical TV series.

Jo White, chair of the Labour MP Red Wall group, cautioned against public infighting, emphasizing the need for unity and discouraging divisive activities within the party.

White criticized No10 for targeting Wes Streeting, dismissing the briefings as misguided. However, a minister downplayed the significance of the briefings, urging the party to refocus on their duties.
