A cruel nursery school teacher committed a heinous act by sexually assaulting her partner’s 4-year-old daughter and causing her death by submerging her in a bathtub.
Amber Lee Hughes, described as a monster, raped and murdered Nada-Jane Chalita on January 23, 2023, while Nada-Jane’s father, Elie, was away for a job interview.
Prior to the tragic incident, Hughes, feeling abandoned by Elie, suspected him of infidelity and expressed anger through messages. In a disturbing message sent before the assault and murder, Hughes conveyed her feelings of betrayal and vengeance towards Elie.
Following a series of events, Hughes placed Nada-Jane in the bathtub and forcibly drowned her. The autopsy revealed that Nada-Jane had also been sexually assaulted twice before her death.
During the trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes admitted to having borderline personality disorder but asserted that she was fully conscious of her actions on that fateful day. She confessed that a dispute with Elie over his alleged unfaithfulness triggered the tragic events.
Hughes acknowledged leaving Nada-Jane unattended in the bathtub with the water running after she became unresponsive. Subsequently, Hughes made multiple suicide attempts after the incident.
At the sentencing on October 27, Hughes attributed her behavior to a traumatic childhood and mental health struggles. Testimonies indicated that Hughes had a history of being bullied and had made previous suicide attempts.
Despite expressing remorse and a desire to undo her actions, the court deemed Hughes’ actions as premeditated. Judge Richard Mkabela cited the threatening messages sent by Hughes before the murder as evidence of her intent to harm Elie.
Hughes had entered a relationship with Elie in 2021 and moved in with him and Nada-Jane. The court heard about the tumultuous relationship, with Hughes making repeated threats against Nada-Jane.
Hughes was convicted in August of premeditated murder and rape, offenses carrying a minimum sentence of life imprisonment. Elie, devastated by the loss of his daughter, expressed that no sentence could adequately address the pain he experienced.
Elie emphasized the lack of justice in the world for the suffering inflicted upon his family.
