“Texas AG Investigates Children’s Underwear Chemical Use”

Must read

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a probe into the potential use of harmful chemicals in the production of children’s underwear by Fruit of the Loom and Hanes. Paxton issued civil investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns about the possible impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. While no allegations of misconduct have been made against either company, Paxton emphasized the importance of ensuring products for children are free from toxic substances.

Fruit of the Loom and its parent company Berkshire Hathaway did not provide immediate comments in response to requests for feedback. Conversely, Gildan, the owner of Hanes, stated its willingness to cooperate with the investigation, highlighting its adherence to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards to meet industry regulations regarding harmful chemicals. Gildan reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe and top-quality products to consumers.

Paxton underscored the growing trend among clothing manufacturers to use synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex to cater to consumer demands for more affordable items. Studies have shown that synthetic fabrics may release microplastics, with chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and “forever chemicals” associated with various health risks including cancer, hormone disruption, and infertility.

The term “forever chemicals” refers to PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Paxton emphasized the need to protect children from potential harm, stressing the importance of ensuring that essential products are free from harmful substances. This investigation follows a similar inquiry by Paxton in April into whether Lululemon Athletica’s activewear contained “forever chemicals.”

Paxton, a Republican, is currently vying for a U.S. Senate seat against Democrat James Talarico, trailing in most polls. The upcoming election on November 3 is one of the most closely watched races in the country.
