Toronto Hydro has successfully restored power to thousands of residents in the city’s east end and parts of downtown following an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. The utility announced on X social media platform at 10:30 p.m. that power had been fully reinstated.
Expressing regret for the inconvenience caused by the outage, Toronto Hydro thanked customers and the community for their patience and understanding during the restoration process. The outage, which affected more than 31,000 customers according to the utility’s outage map at 9:40 p.m., was attributed to a loss of supply from Hydro One.
At the height of the outage, the TTC reported disruptions to elevators and escalators at various Line 2 subway stations. Toronto Metropolitan University also issued a statement on Wednesday night, alerting of a power failure in several buildings. People were advised to evacuate the buildings promptly or avoid the area due to safety concerns.
The affected buildings at the university included Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus. TMU emphasized the need for evacuation as the power failure could compromise critical safety systems like fire detection and sprinklers.
TMU further stated that all classes, labs, and exams were to be temporarily halted during the evacuation, with employees instructed to seek alternative work locations or take a break nearby until power was fully restored.
