“Turkish Football Scandal: 152 Referees Caught in Gambling Probe”

Must read

Disciplinary actions have been initiated by football authorities in Turkey following the discovery that 152 referees were actively engaged in gambling activities. This development comes after former Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho expressed dissatisfaction with officiating standards during his tenure.

A comprehensive investigation conducted over a five-year period revealed that out of the 571 officials in Turkey, 371 had betting accounts, with 152 actively participating in gambling. While some referees had placed only one bet, others had wagered on over 1,000 matches.

Notably, one referee had placed bets a staggering 18,227 times. Seven officials from the Turkish Super Lig and second tier, as well as 15 assistant referees, were implicated in the investigation.

Mourinho’s criticisms of the refereeing standards in Turkey have been echoed by the recent findings, highlighting systemic issues within the officiating ranks. Despite these revelations, there is no evidence linking any of the referee’s bets to matches involving Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has commenced disciplinary proceedings and is prepared to mete out punishments in accordance with their regulations, which include bans of up to a year for officials involved in betting activities. Additionally, FIFA rules allow for broader sanctions, potentially leading to three-year bans and substantial fines for the implicated referees.

TFF president Ethem Haciosmanoglu emphasized the need to cleanse Turkish football of any wrongdoing, stating, “If we want to bring Turkish football to the place it deserves, we have to clean up whatever dirt there is.”

Fenerbahce president Sadettin Saran expressed dismay at the situation but also viewed the exposure of these issues as a positive step for Turkish football.
