A woman from the UK, who was in Turkey for a breast implant procedure, has reached out on social media asking for prayers following a frightening earthquake experience. Identified as Courtney, she shared a video on TikTok under the username @keepingupwithcourts after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Balikesir region. In the video, she expressed alarm at the stormy weather and lightning accompanying the earthquake, stating it was a unique and unsettling event for her.
The earthquake caused buildings to collapse in Sindirgi, leading to multiple injuries and widespread panic. Its impact was felt as far as Istanbul, over 200 miles away. Courtney mentioned being unaware of the earthquake’s magnitude but expressed concern based on her friend’s account of a prior deadly 6.1 earthquake. She emphasized the challenging conditions caused by the storm and expressed worries about their safety for their upcoming flight.
Despite the destruction and injuries, no loss of life has been reported so far, as authorities continue their assessments. Residents, afraid of further tremors, sought refuge in mosques, schools, and sports halls. Turkey’s geographical location on fault lines makes it prone to earthquakes, with the recent one in August resulting in fatalities.
The earthquake struck at 1.048 pm local time at a depth of 5.99km, with subsequent aftershocks. The region had already suffered damage from a previous earthquake, resulting in one fatality. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected individuals.
