“Warning: Beware of Unsafe Chargers for Android and iPhone”

Must read

An urgent warning has been issued to owners of Android or iPhone devices, emphasizing the potential dangers of using unofficial charging accessories. With many new devices now only including a USB-C cable without a charger, consumers may seek cheaper alternatives. However, consumer watchdog Which? has raised safety concerns regarding these budget chargers.

Which? conducted tests on various chargers bought from online platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, B&Q Marketplace, and Debenhams Marketplace. Shockingly, nine chargers were found to pose electric shock risks due to poor manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.

Among the findings was a counterfeit charger designed to resemble an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on the packaging. Additionally, some chargers lacked mandatory UK safety markings and had hazardous internal circuitry that could lead to overheating or fires.

This investigation highlights a recurring issue of unsafe electrical products being sold on online marketplaces, as highlighted by Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?. She emphasized the urgent need for stronger product safety laws and enforcement measures to protect consumers from dangerous products.

In response to the concerns, Amazon reaffirmed its commitment to customer safety and mentioned its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company stated that all products on its platform must adhere to laws and regulations, and any identified hazardous chargers have been removed.

Similarly, B&Q emphasized its dedication to product safety and ensuring that recalled items are not listed on its Marketplace platform. The key takeaway for consumers is to purchase chargers from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate potential safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives.
