Wetherspoon has unveiled its inaugural pub in Europe, located at Spain’s Alicante airport. This new establishment is anticipated to attract a significant number of British travelers heading to popular destinations like Benidorm.
Named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, the pub offers a diverse menu that includes traditional English breakfast items such as fried eggs, bacon, sausage, and baked beans, priced at 10.25 euros. While the decor differs from the typical Wetherspoon’s style, featuring Spanish tiles and cream paintwork, the pub still aims to cater to homesick Brits with familiar dishes.
Although the Alicante pub does not have the classic Wetherspoon carpet, it offers a range of food options, including a Spoons’ curry with a twist of Japanese Katsu offerings. Additionally, customers can enjoy beverages like Amstel, Stella Artois, Guinness, and BrewDog Punk IPA at reasonable prices.
The establishment, operating from 6 am to 9 pm daily, boasts nearly 1,000 square feet of customer space on one level and an outdoor terrace for seating. Wetherspoon’s founder and chairman, Tim Martin, expressed excitement about this new venture and hinted at potential future pub openings overseas, including at airports.
With plans to open approximately 30 pubs in the upcoming year, Wetherspoon’s expansion includes both company-managed and franchise-operated locations, creating job opportunities. The Alicante airport pub is managed by franchise partner Lagardère Travel Retail, marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth strategy.
