“UK Income Inequality Widens: Wealthiest vs Poorest Neighborhoods”

Must read

The disparity in income between affluent and impoverished neighborhoods in the country is widening, with the wealthiest households having nearly £87,000 more in disposable income annually compared to the poorest ones.

According to recent data from the Office for National Statistics, households in the Leamouth area of Tower Hamlets had the highest average disposable income in the country, totaling £107,600 after tax for the financial year ending 2023. In stark contrast, Sparkhill North in Birmingham recorded the lowest average income nationally, with households there having just under £20,800 in disposable income annually, which is £86,800 less than in Leamouth.

The income gap between rich and poor neighborhoods has increased significantly in recent years. In 2020, the difference was £50,300, but it has now grown by 73% in just three years.

Notably, huge disparities in disposable income exist within council areas as well. For instance, in Tower Hamlets, Shadwell North had the lowest average disposable income in the financial year ending 2023, standing at £33,800 annually. This marked a £73,800 gap compared to Leamouth, representing the largest income contrast within the same local authority.

Similar income gaps were observed in other regions like Southwark, Oxford, Salford, and Birmingham, where affluent neighborhoods had significantly higher average disposable incomes than their less prosperous counterparts.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal the stark reality of income inequality across different neighborhoods. By analyzing household disposable incomes after tax deductions, the ONS provides insights into the financial disparities that exist at the local level.

In London, nearly half of the neighborhoods rank in the top 10% nationally in terms of average disposable household income, while other regions like the North East, Wales, and Yorkshire exhibit lower percentages of affluent neighborhoods.

The disparities in income levels underscore the economic diversity within regions, highlighting the varying standards of living experienced by residents across different neighborhoods.
