Manchester United CEO Pushes Back on Midweek Matches

Must read

Manchester United’s CEO, Omar Berrada, has raised concerns with the Premier League regarding the frequency of midweek evening matches the club has leading up to Christmas. United is set to host Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

Following their upcoming match against Fabian Hurzeler’s team, United will not have another weekend home game until Boxing Day when they face Newcastle United. All matches scheduled for Old Trafford before Christmas fall on midweek evenings, posing challenges for fans attending these games.

Reports indicate that Berrada has communicated with the Premier League regarding the fixture list arrangement. The former Manchester City executive is said to have highlighted the additional costs incurred by fans attending evening matches.

Discussions between Berrada and Premier League officials have been described as “constructive” by The Athletic, with Berrada emphasizing the significance of match-going fans to English football culture. He has urged the league to finalize broadcasting decisions earlier to allow supporters to plan around match schedules during the festive period.

Recently, fan groups have expressed discontent over this season’s fixture scheduling, particularly the high number of midweek home games. The United Fans’ Forum conveyed their concerns in a letter, prompting the club to respond. United, along with other Premier League clubs, have supported an increase in Monday and Friday night matches as part of a new broadcast deal to accommodate the expanded European schedule.

Although United did not qualify for European competitions this season, they faced a rigorous schedule last season, culminating in a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Manager Amorim aims to secure a third consecutive Premier League win as his team prepares to face Brighton.

United’s recent victories over Liverpool and Sunderland have propelled them to ninth place in the league, one point ahead of Brighton. Amorim hinted at potential doubts surrounding Harry Maguire and Mason Mount’s availability for the upcoming match.

In summary, United is actively addressing concerns raised by fans and officials regarding fixture arrangements and the impact on match-going supporters. The club’s focus on fan welfare and communication with relevant stakeholders reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the current schedule.
