A woman who hitchhiked narrowly escaped a dangerous trucker responsible for the torture and murder of 50 women. Vanessa Veselka, now 56, almost became a victim of the infamous serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, known as the ‘Truck Stop Killer’, who terrorized the US from 1975 to 1990 by targeting vulnerable hitchhikers, sex workers, and women at truck stops.
In 1985, Vanessa accepted a ride from a trucker near Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, shortly after the discovery of a young hitchhiker’s body at a truck stop. Their journey to Ohio seemed uneventful as they drank Diet Coke and listened to Bruce Springsteen. However, Vanessa’s nightmare began when she was picked up by another trucker who turned out to be Rhoades.
Describing Rhoades as different from typical truckers with an exceptionally clean cab, Vanessa’s situation turned grim as he hinted at sinister intentions and referenced a past victim. After a tense moment with a hunting knife, Vanessa managed to escape into the woods upon hearing a single word from Rhoades: “run”.
Despite the terrifying encounter, Vanessa remained silent for years until 2012 when she discovered Rhoades’ crimes through a news story. Connecting the dots, she realized she had narrowly escaped a predator. Rhoades’ gruesome acts included the abduction, rape, and murder of young victims, using handcuffs to torture and kill women in his truck.
One of his victims was Regina Kay Walters, a 14-year-old girl abducted in 1990, whose tragic fate marked the beginning of Rhoades’ killing spree. Another couple, newlyweds Patricia Candace Walsh and Douglas Scott Zyskowski, fell into his trap while hitchhiking, resulting in a horrifying ordeal that ended in their deaths.
Rhoades was eventually apprehended in 1990 after a trooper found a woman chained inside his truck. He was later convicted and sentenced to life without parole for Regina’s murder. The survivors and families of Rhoades’ victims continue to grapple with the haunting memories of his heinous acts.
