“New ‘Fuel Finder’ Program to Help UK Drivers Save Big”

Must read

Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a new government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. As part of the scheme, all of the approximately 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are now required to promptly notify consumers of any changes in petrol and diesel prices, with this information being shared on various third-party websites and apps for easy comparison by drivers across the country.

The ultimate goal is to provide real-time updates on fuel prices, enabling drivers to make informed choices that could lead to substantial long-term savings. Previously, only about 65% of UK fuel stations were covered under an interim program overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.

The newly launched ‘Fuel Finder’ program mandates all petrol stations to adhere to strict guidelines regarding price transparency. Failure to comply could result in penalties such as receiving a “compliance notice” or facing fines of up to 1% of their global annual turnover.

This initiative comes in response to concerns that motorists have been paying inflated prices at the pump. Even a small price difference of 5p per liter between stations could save the average driver £2.75 per fill-up. Edmund King, president of the motoring group the AA, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers with the ability to access lower fuel prices easily.

Both the AA and RAC have expressed optimism that this initiative will foster increased competition among retailers, leading to more competitive fuel prices nationwide. As more fuel stations participate in the daily price reporting, drivers will have greater visibility into the cheapest options nearby through user-friendly apps or navigation systems.

Currently, the national average for unleaded petrol stands at 132.1p per liter, with diesel priced at 141.2p per liter.
