Wes Streeting has acknowledged his long-standing concern about his “sense of humor” potentially causing him trouble, as a video resurfaced of him jokingly claiming he would become Prime Minister during a live radio broadcast. The Health Secretary, amidst denying any coup plans against Keir Starmer, humorously made the prediction in a 2018 video, which coincidentally resurfaced amid discussions of a leadership challenge against Mr. Starmer.
During an LBC radio segment, host Nick Ferrari light-heartedly played the clip to Streeting, who took it in good spirits, labeling it a “drive-by” by the radio host. Streeting, while laughing, remarked, “It will be my sense of humor that will get me in trouble one day, but if you don’t believe in yourself, who will? That’s my advice to the young people in my constituency.”
In the clip, various MPs were asked about who they thought would be the Prime Minister in ten years, with Streeting humorously suggesting himself. The government found itself in internal conflict after speculation of Streeting planning a leadership challenge against Starmer surfaced, prompting Streeting to deny any such intentions.
Streeting, in his LBC interview, expressed shared frustration with Starmer over the leadership controversy affecting the government. He defended his relationship with top adviser Morgan McSweeney, emphasizing their positive rapport. Streeting likened the situation to a reality show, stating it was the worst attack since a recent incident involving rugby star Joe Marler. He reiterated his support for the Prime Minister amid the turmoil.
Starmer clarified that no Downing Street briefings targeted Streeting, emphasizing his intent to handle any such issues promptly. The ongoing internal strife within the government continues to capture attention, with Streeting denying any involvement in plotting against Starmer and reiterating his commitment to supporting the Prime Minister.
