In response to inquiries from The Mirror about the fairness of his plan, Farage acknowledged that there might be short-term concerns for some individuals. However, TUC general secretary Paul Nowak voiced strong opposition, emphasizing that EU workers who have contributed to Britain’s economy should not be treated as inferior citizens.
Farage also proposed a significant increase in the NHS surcharge for foreigners residing in the UK, raising it from £1,035 to £2,718 annually. This adjustment would necessitate renegotiating the Brexit agreement established under the Conservative government, although Farage did not specify what concessions he would offer in return. When questioned about engaging with the EU on this matter, Farage jokingly remarked that he is not well-received in Brussels.
Tom Brufatto, the policy director of Best for Britain, an organization advocating for closer UK-EU relations, criticized Farage’s agenda as detrimental to the progress in UK-EU ties and potentially leading to higher costs for consumers struggling with living expenses. Brufatto highlighted the adverse impact of Farage’s Brexit advocacy and warned that his policies could further weaken the country’s economic standing.
Labour MP Luke Charters ridiculed Farage’s claim of being able to swiftly negotiate a new deal following his involvement in Brexit, dismissing it as unrealistic. In response to concerns about the safety net for workers in case of job losses, Farage emphasized the need to address the current employment model, stating the importance of tackling the issue of a large number of unemployed individuals of working age.
