After relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018, Caitlyn Moony found herself enchanted by the city’s natural beauty and vibrant culture. Initially drawn to Vancouver for its reputation as one of the best places to live, she soon discovered the challenges of building a new life in a foreign land.
Struggling to establish a professional network and lacking the coveted “Canadian experience,” Moony faced difficulties securing meaningful employment. She took on a demanding admin role at a startup, working long hours to afford the high cost of living in the city. Despite her initial excitement, she found herself disillusioned with Vancouver as it failed to meet her lofty expectations.
Loneliness compounded her dissatisfaction, as she missed the sense of community she had experienced in previous locations. Frustrated by the city’s slower pace and inclement weather, Moony longed for the warmth and vibrancy of a bustling metropolis. The onset of the pandemic further isolated her, intensifying feelings of isolation and boredom.
Eventually, Moony decided to return to London, where she had previously lived. While she reveled in the energetic atmosphere of the city, she realized that her time in Vancouver had subtly transformed her. Embracing a more introspective and tranquil way of life, she recognized the value of the stillness she had found in the West Coast city.
Despite its imperfections, Moony yearns to reconcile with Vancouver, acknowledging its flaws while appreciating the unique bond they share. Packed with a newfound understanding and readiness to embrace the city on its own terms, she returned to Vancouver with a sense of reconciliation and a desire to reconnect with the place she once called home.
