Sabrina Gervais, a dedicated mother, healthcare professional, and seasoned flag football player, is gearing up to potentially become an Olympian. Leading Canada’s national women’s team at the 2026 world championship, Gervais aims not only for a gold medal but also a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, marking the sport’s Olympic debut.
Expressing her aspirations, Gervais shared, “It would be realizing a dream I would’ve never dreamt before. I never thought about the Olympics, but now that I’m still in the loop, I think the chances are good if I can stay healthy and continue to be a leader for my team. That would definitely be a dream come true.”
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship kicks off in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Canada set to face Panama, Brazil, and Japan in the initial matches. The top two teams will secure Olympic berths, with a potential third spot if the United States reaches the gold-medal game.
While the world championship serves as a crucial Olympic qualifier, failing to secure a spot would mean participating in subsequent events for another chance at qualifying. Canada, a strong contender for gold, earned its world championship berth by finishing as a runner-up in the last IFAF Americas Continental championship held in Panama.
Reflecting on past achievements, Gervais acknowledged Canada’s bronze medal win at the 2025 World Games in China and emphasized the team’s growing recognition on the international stage. Despite the rising profile, Gervais remains focused on giving her best performance and supporting her teammates on the field.
Aside from her athletic pursuits, Gervais, a 36-year-old from Maskinonge, Que., balances her football career with motherhood and professional responsibilities as an osteopath and kinesiologist. She highlighted the importance of resilience, patience, and a strong support system in managing her diverse roles.
Emphasizing the significance of teamwork and chemistry, Gervais commended head coach Rachel Lessard for her leadership and values that have contributed to Canada’s success. Looking ahead, Gervais maintains a day-by-day approach to her football career, aiming to make a positive impact both on and off the field while inspiring the next generation of players.
