Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the league table, pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Rapid, the top team in the Northern Super League, at McMahon Stadium on Saturday. Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later.
Ottawa fought back with Jung Min-Young finding the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes leveling the score at 2-2 just before halftime stoppage time. Thurton completed her brace just before the break, setting the Wild on course for the win. Jorian Baucom also added a goal for the Wild, who now hold a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
In response, Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, whose record now stands at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-match unbeaten streak. Despite having 54% possession, Ottawa was outshot by the Wild 16-13 (9-6 on target) and conceded six corners to Calgary’s tally of eleven. The Rapid received one yellow card and one red card during the match.
In another game, Jessica De Filippo’s 57th-minute goal equalized the score, and she secured a dramatic late winner five minutes into second-half stoppage time to guide the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had initially put the Tides ahead in the 19th minute.
Vancouver, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot Halifax 18-13 (6-4 on target). The Tides earned four of the match’s six corners, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards shown during the game.
