According to his agent Mike Maguire, John peacefully passed away at his residence on Saturday night after being under hospice care. The New York Yankees, where John had a significant impact as a key member of their pitching rotation, paid tribute to him, acknowledging his enduring legacy and popularity among fans.

Throughout his career spanning from 1963 to 1989, John, a four-time All-Star, amassed a notable record of 288-231 with an ERA of 3.34. Recognized for his exceptional pitching skills, John faced a career-threatening injury at the age of 31 in 1974 when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.
