Marcus Ericsson secured victory at the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham with two significant passes. Initially, Ericsson and teammate Will Power made contact while Ericsson was maneuvering late in the race. Later on, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean with four laps remaining to claim his fifth career win in IndyCar.
Ericsson attributed the victory to their superior speed, stating, “I believe we won based on our pure pace. We had the strongest car on the track, and our strategic gameplay, aggressive driving, and precise execution led us to victory.”
Romain Grosjean finished second, marking his first top-five performance of the season, while Will Power secured the third spot. Alex Palou, the current leader in driver rankings, finished fourth.
The Andretti Global team, comprising Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who is second in the driver standings, strategized to target Palou after Kirkwood’s crash in the 53rd lap. The team aimed to prevent Palou from earning more points to secure his fifth IndyCar title.
Despite encountering some miscommunications during the race, the team managed to execute their strategy effectively. Power unintentionally impeded Ericsson briefly while the latter was attempting to pass him, but the incident did not significantly affect the final standings.
Palou earned 32 points in the race, extending his lead over Kirkwood in the standings to 133 points. Ericsson’s pivotal move came when he overtook Grosjean, who struggled with fuel conservation and tire degradation towards the end of the race.
The event saw several incidents, with multiple cautions and several cars forced out of the race due to collisions. The race marked Markham’s debut as the host city for the only IndyCar event in Canada, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after a long tenure.
Despite facing challenges during the event, Ericsson praised the track layout and the enthusiastic fan support. He expressed confidence that the event would run more smoothly in the future as the organizers gain experience with the new venue.
