Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts flocked to Great Park in Irvine, California, last weekend to enjoy performances by their favorite artists at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.
The Daisy Chain Fields charity festival, organized by popular singer Olivia Rodrigo, emulated the pioneering Lilith Fair from the 1990s with an all-female lineup. The festival featured a mix of established and emerging stars, including queer pop sensation Chappell Roan, rapper Doechii, and iconic punk and rock bands like Bikini Kill and Garbage.
Before the festival kicked off, Rodrigo announced that they had raised $10 million for the event’s 10 non-profit partners, such as Planned Parenthood and the National Institute for Reproductive Health. This amount was later matched by Melinda French Gates, bringing the total funds raised to $20 million.
Rodrigo unveiled the festival plans back in June, emphasizing that all artists would perform for free, with proceeds going to charities supporting women and girls. The event featured special guest appearances, such as Alanis Morissette filling in for Karen O and a performance of “Landslide” with the legendary Stevie Nicks.
The festival, named “Daisy Chain” to symbolize unity and strength in collaboration, took place amidst ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the U.S. post the Roe v. Wade reversal in 2022. President Trump’s administration is currently pushing changes to federal family planning programs, sparking legal challenges from multiple states.
Despite the somber backdrop of women’s rights regression, Rodrigo expressed optimism, citing the solidarity and activism showcased at Daisy Chain Fields. The festival not only offered a stellar musical lineup but also featured various art installations, including a LEGO mural and a tribute to the Riot Grrrl movement.
Attendees could immerse themselves in interactive exhibits, leave wishes on a tree installation by Yoko Ono, and engage with philanthropic organizations at the Daisy Chain Reaction village. Participants praised the festival’s positive atmosphere and the sense of community, underscoring the importance of supporting women’s rights in challenging times.
The festival’s success and the generous contributions made by attendees and partners left a lasting impact on the non-profit organizations involved, highlighting the resilience and unity of the movement for gender equality and reproductive rights.
