In a recent interview, Katie Adler, the organizer of Fat Marmot Week, discussed the event and the winner, a plump yellow-bellied marmot named Dawn. Dawn, known for fathering multiple offspring and enjoying licking salt off rocks, nearly doubled his weight from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms during the summer competition.
Adler expressed that Dawn deserved the title, calling him a “special boy who likes to eat rocks.” As the reigning champion, Dawn now represents the Marmot Project, a research initiative facing financial challenges due to cuts in science funding in the U.S.
The Marmot Project, which began in 1962, studies yellow-bellied marmots and their adaptations to environmental changes. However, ongoing funding cuts jeopardize the project’s future. To raise awareness and funds, the project launched creative initiatives like OnlyMarms, an OnlyFans account showcasing marmots on camera traps.
Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the project acknowledges that sustainable funding is crucial for long-term research. In response to funding uncertainties, the Marmot Project initiated a petition urging Congress to restore research funding. While the future remains uncertain, the project plans to host another Fat Marmot Week in 2027 to continue its mission of studying and protecting marmots.
