The Gwich’in Tribal Council has decided to delay its upcoming annual general assembly that was originally set for next week. This postponement was announced in a press release on Thursday, citing the need for additional time to finalize certain financial documents.
Scheduled to commence in Fort McPherson next Wednesday, the meeting will now be rescheduled, with specific dates and instructions on participation to be communicated in the near future. The council emphasized that the choice to postpone was made after careful consideration of the significant business typically conducted during the annual general assembly.
This delay echoes past challenges faced by the council regarding financial matters. In a previous assembly, the council disclosed that audited financial statements would not be released, a standard practice for such gatherings. The issues were attributed to difficulties in obtaining financial data from the Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), a subsidiary of the tribal council, with references made to obstacles stemming from the GDC that impeded the completion of the required audited statements.
