NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, according to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. Prior to joining the 67’s, he played minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020.

Reports from the OHL indicate that Mayich was hospitalized on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona. The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, stated in a news release that the entire organization is keeping Matthew Mayich in their thoughts and prayers for a successful recovery. He extended the organization’s deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time. OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford also conveyed similar sentiments, expressing support for Mayich, his parents, and the Mayich family.

The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, shared congratulatory messages for Mayich in 2021 when he joined the ’67s and in 2023 when he was drafted by the Blues. The Huskies highlighted Mayich’s longstanding association with the organization since he was nine years old.
