Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament. The renowned sisters secured a wild card entry on Wednesday to compete in the doubles event, a competition they have triumphed in twice previously.
Serena Williams made her return to tennis this summer following a four-year hiatus. The duo had planned to compete at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained during her singles match. They also participated in the Cincinnati Open, exiting in the initial round.
Their history at the U.S. Open includes victories in the doubles category in 1999 and 2009, boasting a commendable record of 27 wins and 7 losses in nine appearances. In their most recent outing in 2022, they were defeated in the opening round, which was anticipated to be Serena’s final match in Flushing Meadows.
During the mixed doubles event, Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz, achieving success in one match before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, is slated to compete in the women’s singles competition.
The Williams sisters have a remarkable history in doubles, clinching 14 Grand Slam titles and securing Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for an impressive eight-week period.
While Serena opted out of the singles competition, where she has claimed six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she decided to participate in both doubles events through wild card entries.
Their initial U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s first singles triumph at the same event. The peak of their dominance as a duo came around a decade later, with wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another victory at Flushing Meadows later that season. Subsequently, they conquered the Australian Open in 2010 and the French Open, holding all four major titles simultaneously.
The women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open is set to kick off on September 3.
