Quarterback Sara Parker expressed her disbelief at Canada’s senior women securing their fourth flag football world title and a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics. The victory, their first since 2014, came after a hard-fought 27-20 win over the United States at the International Federation of American Football competition in Düsseldorf, Germany. Parker reflected on the pride she felt, attributing the success to the hard work put in by herself, her teammates, and everyone who supported them.
During a visit to CBC Sports headquarters in Toronto, Parker and Canadian national senior men’s team player Guillaume Béland discussed the significance of their achievement for the future of flag football, especially with its upcoming Olympic debut in Los Angeles. At 26, Parker has played a pivotal role in the sport, establishing programs at various educational institutions and contributing to its growth.
Champlain College excelled in its inaugural year, moving up to the top tier from the fourth division. Parker’s initiatives during the COVID-impacted year of 2000 laid the groundwork for a Quebec-based university flag football league, which launched the following year. With the sport now set for the Olympics, Parker emphasized the potential for continued growth and inspiring young athletes to dream big.
Recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player for her exceptional performance, Parker shared her joy at the championship victory, which has garnered attention from various acquaintances and old friends. Similarly, Béland played a crucial role in securing a bronze medal and Olympic berth for the Canadian men’s team, highlighting the emotional impact of the achievement.
Transitioning from tackle football to flag football presented challenges for Béland, requiring adjustments in skills and strategies. Looking ahead, both players aim to elevate their game through national team training camps, international competitions, and a commitment to promoting flag football on a global scale. Their ultimate goal is to set a standard for the sport and inspire the next generation of athletes.
