The Canadian women’s basketball team emerged victorious with an 83-53 win over Mexico in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament held in Guadalajara. This triumph brings Canada closer to securing a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Canada also clinched the sole berth in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2028, the final phase for qualification to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Kayla Alexander led Canada with 14 points, along with four rebounds and three assists. Agot Makeer contributed 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, adding three rebounds and three assists without any turnovers. The Canadian team dominated the tournament, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record, defeating Senegal, the Philippines, Mexico, and New Zealand before triumphing over Mexico in the final.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “The goal all summer long was to win this tournament, and we did that.” She commended the blend of young players and veterans who came together for the first time, highlighting their strong teamwork that culminated in victory.
Syla Swords scored 12 points, while Yvonne Ejim showcased an impressive 10-point, 17-rebound double-double performance. Ejim also contributed two assists and a block, earning a game-high efficiency rating of 22 and a plus-32 rating.
Coach Fortner attributed the team’s success to a strategic defensive approach that limited the opponent’s offensive capabilities. By focusing on defensive stops and restricting three-point shots, Canada effectively controlled the game, holding Mexico to just five successful three-pointers out of 26 attempts.
Fortner emphasized the pivotal role of defense in creating offensive opportunities, underscoring its significant impact on the team’s performance in the final match.
