At the recent Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California, Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly, setting a personal best time of 56.71 seconds. She later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medals to five in the competition.
In a different turn of events, McIntosh, the 19-year-old from Toronto and current world-record holder, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event. Despite winning the B final, McIntosh expressed frustration and took full responsibility for the misjudgment that led to her exclusion from the A final.
Reflecting on her performance, McIntosh stated, “I was very mad at myself for missing that A final,” and acknowledged the need to rectify the situation. She will strive to learn from this setback as she continues to compete, with upcoming races including the 200m IM event.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk showcased their talents by clinching silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney emphasized the significance of both athletes sharing the podium, highlighting the hard work and dedication that contributed to their success. Tierney also celebrated his first international gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke earlier in the event.
Ruck continued her impressive performance by guiding Canada to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event. Alongside her teammates, Ruck contributed to the team’s success, securing yet another medal in the competition. The U.S. claimed gold in the women’s relay event, while Australia took the silver.
In the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, the Canadian team narrowly missed out on a podium finish, landing in fourth place. Despite their efforts, the U.S. secured gold, Australia claimed silver, and Japan took bronze in the event.
