“Caution Advised: Paracetamol Use Risks Revealed”

Must read

Paracetamol, the primary active component in Disprol, Hedex, Medinol, and Panadol, is widely available in pharmacies and supermarkets. Known for its efficacy in alleviating various aches, pains, and flu symptoms, around 200 million packs are sold annually without a prescription in the UK alone.

Nevertheless, it’s crucial to note that paracetamol may not be suitable for everyone. The NHS recommends that certain individuals, such as those with prior allergic reactions to paracetamol or other medications, as well as individuals with liver or kidney problems, should seek advice from a healthcare professional before using this medicine.

Apart from these groups, there are others who should exercise caution when using paracetamol:

The NHS guidelines state that most individuals aged 16 and above can safely take paracetamol, including pregnant or breastfeeding women. While paracetamol is generally safe to use alongside most prescription drugs and antibiotics, there are exceptions. It is advisable to consult a doctor before taking paracetamol if you are prescribed warfarin for blood clot prevention or medications for epilepsy or tuberculosis.

Regarding other painkillers, the NHS advises against taking paracetamol alongside other paracetamol-containing medications to avoid the risk of overdose. Adults can typically consume two 500mg paracetamol tablets up to four times within 24 hours, with at least a four-hour gap between each dose and not exceeding eight tablets in a day.

Despite its general safety, recent research from the University of Nottingham raised concerns about prolonged paracetamol use, particularly in older adults. The study highlighted potential risks of cardiac, digestive, and renal complications associated with regular paracetamol use in older patients.

The study, which analyzed medical data from over 180,000 individuals aged 65 and above who had been prescribed paracetamol, underscored the increased likelihood of serious complications with prolonged usage. Lead author Professor Weiya Zhang emphasized the need for cautious consideration when prescribing paracetamol for long-term pain management in older individuals.
