Actress Prunella Scales has passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, which affected her ability to fully comprehend the loss of her husband Timothy West last year. The renowned star of Faulty Towers died at the age of 93, just a few months after Timothy.
Their children confirmed the sad news in a statement, announcing that Prunella peacefully passed away at her home in London at the age of 93. Despite dementia leading to her retirement from a remarkable acting career spanning nearly 70 years, she remained at home until her final days, even watching Fawlty Towers shortly before her passing.
Survived by two sons, one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, Prunella received exceptional care in her last days. Timothy and Prunella, who married in 1963 and had two sons together, faced challenges when Prunella’s short-term memory began to fade in 2013.
A year later, Timothy disclosed that she was living with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. The couple starred in 10 seasons of Great Canal Journeys on Channel 4 from 2014 until Prunella’s Alzheimer’s advanced to a point where they had to discontinue the show in 2020.
Despite the progression of her illness, Prunella received unwavering support and love from Timothy, with their relationship remaining strong. Timothy expressed that they managed to cope with the situation, although as the disease worsened, communication between them became more challenging.
Timothy recounted the doctor’s words during Prunella’s diagnosis, where they were advised that coping with the condition would be difficult but manageable. According to the NHS, vascular dementia, caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, affects around 180,000 people in the UK, with symptoms worsening over time.
For those affected by similar situations, support and guidance can be sought from Dementia UK. Timothy passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 12, 2024, with their son Samuel revealing that Prunella was not well enough to fully grasp the news.
