Controversy Erupts as Trump Pushes for Lake Ontario to Be Renamed “Lake America”

Must read

President Donald Trump has reportedly urged Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, sparking controversy in Canada amid ongoing trade tensions. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum disclosed that Trump had directly contacted Apple regarding the proposed renaming. It is anticipated that this change may soon be reflected on Apple Maps as “Lake America.”

Following the signing of an executive order by Trump to rename Lake Ontario, tensions escalated between Canada and the U.S., leading to the imposition of tariffs by both countries. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney voiced opposition to the name change, affirming that the lake, situated between Ontario and New York state, will continue to be recognized as Lake Ontario.

Google announced that in compliance with official government sources, Google Maps in the U.S. will now display “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario. However, Canadian users will still see Lake Ontario on the platform. Despite this, several websites in Canada briefly displayed “Lake America,” but have since reverted to showing Lake Ontario.

Apple has not responded to inquiries regarding the potential renaming of Lake Ontario on its maps. Notably, Trump had previously issued an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in 2025, which has been adopted by some online mapping services and news outlets. Apple Maps currently refers to the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
