Residents of Regina have been noticing an increase in coyote sightings in local parks, causing concern among some community members. Scott Paton, a regular visitor to Les Sherman Park, encountered a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. Paton described the coyote as non-aggressive, possibly curious or searching for food. Despite not seeing the coyote since, he mentioned finding its scat in the area and remains unconcerned, stating that coyotes are a natural part of the urban environment.
However, not all residents share Paton’s comfort level. Reports on social media have detailed multiple encounters with a coyote near Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August. Some individuals recounted being chased or followed by the animal, with observations that it seemed unfazed by attempts to scare it away.
City Councillor David Froh also had a close encounter with a coyote while running in Les Sherman Park. Froh emphasized the importance of addressing persistent wildlife sightings as a public safety concern. The City of Regina acknowledged receiving reports of two coyotes in the neighborhood and is collaborating with conservation officers to safely relocate the animals.
Froh assured residents that removal procedures are conducted with community safety and animal welfare in mind, typically involving tranquilization. While recognizing the apprehension coyote sightings can evoke, Froh emphasized the need to coexist with wildlife in the city and prioritize the safety of both pets and animals.
In light of these sightings, Regina residents are encouraged to report any encounters with coyotes or other potentially hazardous wildlife to city authorities. Meanwhile, the movie “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently showing in cinemas across Regina.
