The cancellation of a cruise followed the tragic discovery of Suzanne Rees, an 80-year-old woman who was found deceased on a remote deserted island where she was left behind during a tour stop.
Suzanne Rees went missing after failing to join a dinner gathering following a visit to Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. She was part of a high-end 60-day circumnavigation voyage of Australia that cost £40,000 per ticket.
The cruise operator Coral Expeditions announced the cancellation of the remaining voyage due to the unfortunate passing of Suzanne Rees and prior mechanical problems, according to CEO Mark Fifield.
During an organized hike on the island, Suzanne Rees fell ill and separated from the group. Allegedly, she was instructed to descend the mountain alone, and the cruise departed without her, as reported by her daughter Katherine Rees.
Tragically, Suzanne Rees was not reported missing until 6 pm on Saturday, around five hours after she was left on Lizard Island. Her lifeless body was discovered 50 meters off a hiking trail leading to Cook’s Look, the highest summit on the island, after the ship returned to the island in the early hours of Sunday.
An investigation will delve into the circumstances surrounding Suzanne Rees’ abandonment on the island, including allegations of a lack of passenger count before the vessel’s departure. The family of Ms. Rees criticized Coral Expeditions for their perceived negligence.
CEO Mark Fifield confirmed the voyage’s cancellation and assured passengers of full refunds and assistance in arranging their return via chartered flights. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has restricted new passengers boarding the Coral Adventurer and plans to inspect the vessel upon its arrival in Darwin.
Authorities are treating the death as sudden and non-suspicious, with police involvement and an ongoing investigation. Tourism Tropical North Queensland expressed condolences to the family and awaits further details pending the investigation.
Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifield, offered condolences to the family and pledged support during the investigation process. The company is cooperating with authorities and refraining from further comments until the investigation concludes.
