A supporter of the Labour Party has taken action ahead of any potential government intervention to restrict children’s use of social media. Dale Vince, known for his outspoken views, criticized tech moguls Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he described as unrestricted influence over young people.
Responding to the top concern of parents, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a new mobile plan that permits children to make unlimited calls and send texts but excludes internet access. Millionaire Dale Vince argued that this traditional approach was necessary due to the harmful online content children are exposed to, calling on policymakers to take decisive steps.
This move comes amidst growing pressure on the government to implement a ban on social media access for individuals under 16. Recently, over 60 Labour MPs urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead in imposing such a ban. Other countries are reportedly contemplating similar measures, with Sir Keir stating that all options remain under consideration.
One of Dale Vince’s ventures, Ecotalk, has unveiled a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited calls and texts starting at £4 per month. Notably, this plan does not include internet connectivity, distinguishing it from most other options available in the market.
Explaining the rationale behind the initiative, Dale Vince emphasized the importance of providing a communication tool that keeps children connected without exposing them to online risks. He underscored the need to address the negative impact of irresponsible tech platforms on young individuals, asserting that immediate action was essential to protect children from the influence of prominent tech figures.
Ecotalk, founded by Dale Vince in 2018, collaborates with renowned naturalist Chris Packham to support environmental projects in Sussex and Devon focused on habitat restoration and biodiversity conservation.
