In a Manhattan lab, forensic scientists in white lab coats are dedicatedly working to fulfill a promise made 25 years ago. Their focus is on extracting DNA from numerous human remains collected post the World Trade Center terrorist attacks to match them with samples provided by victims’ families from items like toothbrushes and razors.
The methods used to extract DNA and the forensic investigative techniques have evolved significantly since 2001. Mark Desire, the assistant director of forensic biology at the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, emphasized the emotional impact of identifying and returning loved ones to their families.
Approximately 40% of the 2,753 individuals who perished at Ground Zero remain unidentified, including about 10 of the 24 Canadian victims. Recently, the lab achieved its first identification of previously unknown remains using a pioneering technique, though the individual’s identity remains confidential.
The latest breakthrough technique merges DNA testing with genetic genealogy, leveraging family tree research conducted by the New York City Police Department. Dr. Jason Graham, New York’s Chief Medical Examiner, hailed this innovation as a significant step forward with the potential for more identifications.
Monica Iken-Murphy, whose husband was a victim of the attacks, finds renewed hope in these advancements. The ongoing efforts aim to provide closure to families and honor the memory of the victims who lost their lives on that tragic day.
