Welsh artist Bronwen Lewis, initially drawn to covering Dolly Parton’s tracks in her native language, never imagined she would have the opportunity to collaborate with the renowned country singer herself.
Lewis, a singer-songwriter from Wales, began sharing her Welsh adaptations of Parton’s songs online around two years ago. Her rendition of “Jolene” captured the interest of Parton’s niece, singer Jada Star, leading to a collaboration with the country music icon.
Describing the experience as surreal, Lewis expressed gratitude for Parton’s belief in the project. The new Welsh version of “Jolene” was recorded in the studio by Lewis and Star, featuring vocals from Parton in both English and Welsh. Released on major streaming platforms, this track marks Parton’s second posthumous release and one of her final recordings before her passing at 80 in August.
Star, appreciative of the opportunity, emphasized the hope that listeners would resonate with the collaboration. Lewis, a lifelong fan of country music, highlighted the significance of Parton’s authenticity and how it aligns with the Welsh language.
The Welsh language, with a rich history predating the Roman Empire, has persevered through centuries of suppression. Currently, around 17.8% of the Welsh population speaks Welsh, as per the 2021 census data.
Lewis underscored the pride in their language and culture, emphasizing the potential impact of this collaboration in promoting Welsh heritage and unity across different languages and cultures. The artists aim for their music to transcend language barriers, showcasing the universal emotions shared by all individuals.
