Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to fame has not only inspired her music and the creation of a theme park and podcast but is now the inspiration behind a new musical heading to Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the production promises to authentically share Dolly’s life story through her own words and the songs that have defined her experiences.
In a video announcement about the Broadway debut, the 80-year-old singer assured viewers that the musical would stay true to her life’s narrative. She emphasized that the show delves into her real struggles, losses, loves, and the path she took to success, rather than just focusing on superficial glamour.
The musical will feature a mix of new songs crafted specifically for the production and some of Dolly’s iconic hits, such as “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Scheduled to kick off on December 7 in New York City, the performances are slated to continue until November 21, 2027.
Parton, expressing her excitement, described the upcoming musical as a long-awaited dream come true. With a career spanning nearly seven decades, she has penned over 3,000 songs, sold in excess of 100 million albums globally, and holds esteemed positions in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical made its debut last summer in Nashville at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, drawing sold-out crowds during its six-week engagement. Director Bartlett Sher highlighted the profound connection audiences feel with Dolly, recounting how mentioning her name ignites fond memories of inspiration and happiness she has brought into people’s lives.
The show’s statement emphasizes the musical’s unique opportunity for Parton to share her raw, unfiltered story in a manner unprecedented before, going beyond the glitz and glamour associated with her image.
