Embarking on an extraordinary journey, a family in Yorkshire constructed their own residence and subsequently sold it to fund their global expedition, highlighting a lifestyle that has significantly reduced their living costs. Danielle Booth and her spouse Mike Booth, aged 36, initially contemplated traveling the world after a memorable French road trip with their children, Emmy, now 14, and Eli, now 10, in 2019.
Driven by their newfound passion for travel, Mike, a skilled joiner, undertook the project of building a four-bedroom detached house from the ground up in 2020, with the intention of selling it to finance their globe-trotting aspirations. Upon completing the renovation project three years later, the couple diligently saved money by selling their possessions on platforms like Vinted and to acquaintances before selling their property in April of this year.
The family commenced their one-way journey on October 28, flying into Bangkok, Thailand, to kickstart their adventure. Planning to travel for at least a year, Danielle revealed that their current weekly budget amounts to approximately £500, a sum derived from the proceeds of their house sale and a modest income from Mike’s business in the UK.
Formerly employed in the NHS, Danielle emphasized that their altered lifestyle has afforded them a regal existence, feeling more secure in Thailand than in their native UK. While residing in Bradford, West Yorkshire, the family’s monthly expenditures reached an estimated £4,500.
By relinquishing their ties in the UK, the 34-year-old contended that they anticipate halving their living costs, providing their children with a comprehensive cultural education. Danielle expressed, “We constructed the house to facilitate our full-time travel aspirations, with that ultimate goal in mind.
“Upon committing to this endeavor, we diligently saved and set aside funds over the past two years. The living expenses here are half of those in the UK. What we are allocating for all expenses in our current location is equivalent to what we solely spent on mortgage and bills back home, not to mention other activities.
“In the UK, our family’s monthly outlays amounted to around £4,500 for all expenses. We aim to sustain ourselves on half of this amount [while traveling]. Initially, it fills us with pride as leaving behind one’s comfort and routine is no easy feat.
“As much as it may seem like ‘wow, look at the lifestyle we are leading,’ challenges do arise as one steps out of their comfort zone. It is empowering, and each day, I express to my husband my disbelief at how cost-effective it is here and why we did not embark on this journey sooner.
“All the funds we expended in the UK on basic necessities simply to get by, here we can live like royalty. The contrast in costs is staggering. Despite leading a comfortable and pleasant life [in the UK], my husband had to toil constantly for us to sustain that lifestyle due to the exorbitant expenses.
“Relocating has further opened our eyes to the exorbitant costs in the UK. It is truly daunting how much one must pay to lead a modest life in the UK compared to living elsewhere.”
Danielle also cited escalating crime rates and concerns regarding the educational system as additional factors that influenced their decision to travel. She remarked, “Each child is unique and may not always conform to the rigid structures of the UK educational system.
“While we do not oppose the UK education system, we believe in alternative educational approaches, recognizing that attending school is not the sole determinant of success. With a 14-year-old daughter, we harbor apprehensions. We question whether we would feel at ease allowing our daughter to venture into a local town in our homeland, and the answer is negative.
“The sense of insecurity and the alarming state of affairs are disconcerting, with our teenager striving for independence amid numerous alarming occurrences. The situation appears to be deteriorating. Despite wandering in inclement weather here, we do not harbor fears. The locals are exceedingly amiable. People here are much more content and willing to extend a helping hand.”
During their travels, Emmy will continue her studies in mathematics and English through an online private tutor, while both girls will engage in cultural immersion and physical activities as part of their daily routine. Presently situated in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the family-of-four plans to explore destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan.
