“Fugitive Escapes Prison Due to Clerical Error”

Must read

A fugitive escaped from prison due to a clerical error that led to his mistaken release. William “Billy” Smith received a 45-month sentence for committing multiple frauds at Croydon Crown Court. Unfortunately, a mix-up occurred, attributing a different sentence to him in the system, resulting in his premature release. Law enforcement is actively searching for him to return him to custody.

Smith’s co-defendant, Joseph Smith, received a suspended sentence after appearing in court, while Smith was sentenced during a video link hearing at HMP Wandsworth. The incorrect data entry led to the release process being initiated erroneously, allowing Smith to be freed by mistake.

Authorities attempted to rectify the error promptly, but a subsequent mistake led to Smith being released prematurely. Surrey Police issued an appeal to locate Billy Smith, describing him as a 35-year-old man last seen in specific attire and having ties to Woking. In a separate incident, Brahim Kaddour Cherif, an Algerian national, was also released erroneously from HMP Wandsworth, prompting urgent search efforts by the police.
