In Gaza City, remnants of an Israeli airstrike from the beginning of the conflict were poignant on Tuesday morning. Over 100 orange stretchers, adorned with Palestinian flags, lay amidst the wreckage and abandoned structures. Some flags, smaller in size, symbolized the young lives lost. Photos and flower petals adorned these makeshift shrouds, containing the remains of 112 individuals from the Abu Sharia and Hasayna families. These families, part of the same lineage, perished in the Israeli airstrike on November 23, 2023.
Survivors and mourners, including family members, gathered to pay their respects and lay the deceased to rest at the nearby Baptist cemetery. The families, in collaboration with Gaza’s Civil Defence, have been tirelessly searching for the remains of their loved ones. However, the prolonged process has been hindered by the scarcity of heavy machinery in the region.
Mahmoud Hasayneh, present to bid farewell to his siblings, expressed the renewed pain and sorrow inflicted on the family. He lamented, “Now we will start a new broken heart with this mission and all our family is crying.”
Last month, Youssef Abu Sharia, who lost several family members in the same airstrike, witnessed the painstaking efforts to recover human remains from the debris. The lack of operational heavy machinery, compounded by damages from Israeli strikes and restrictions on equipment entry, has impeded the retrieval process.
At the funeral service, Abu Sharia and his relatives found solace in finally laying their loved ones to rest after years of waiting. Yet, the occasion was also marked by the resurgence of emotional distress over the tragic events. Tayseer Abu Sharia, another relative present, highlighted the struggle endured over the years in search of closure.
The Civil Defence and human rights organizations have urged Israel to facilitate the entry of heavy equipment into Gaza to expedite the exhumation of bodies trapped under the rubble. An estimated 7,400 individuals are still buried beneath the debris, with fears that the actual count could be significantly higher due to entire families being wiped out in single attacks.
Mahmoud Basal, the spokesperson for Civil Defence, reiterated the urgent need for international intervention to overcome the logistical challenges faced in the recovery efforts. The funeral, commemorating 112 lives lost, underscored the unprecedented tragedy that has befallen the Palestinian community.
Amidst prayers and somber chants, the families carried the shrouds covered with flags to the cemetery, a long-awaited moment of closure. As they bid farewell to their departed loved ones, the question lingered in their hearts—where are the thousands who are still missing, their fate unknown?
