After an action-packed series of events at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the initial phase of competition is coming to a close. The intensity was palpable at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, where ball hockey contenders from various regions in the province vied for accolades on Tuesday. Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious over Team Avalon in a thrilling 4-3 encounter to claim the gold medal. Raine Foss, a thirteen-year-old player from Paradise, sealed the win with a pivotal goal, expressing his delight at seizing the moment. Reflecting on the match, Raine shared, “I passed it back to the defense, saw the opening, made my move, and scored. Representing MPS is an incredible experience, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
One of Raine’s teammates, Reid Swain, exuded joy at departing Corner Brook with the coveted gold medal. He remarked, “We’ve put in the effort over the past few months, and honestly, we didn’t anticipate this outcome. Yet, we persevered, and the feeling is indescribable.” Although Team Avalon’s Ryan Walsh didn’t clinch the medal shade he aimed for, he cherished the camaraderie and fun moments experienced during the event. Ryan shared, “Staying with the guys, reminiscing about school, and all the activities we engaged in—it was all enjoyable.”
Team Central managed to secure the bronze medal, a feat that fourteen-year-old Jack Stone will proudly bring back to Grand Falls-Windsor. Jack expressed his elation, stating, “It’s absolutely thrilling, you know? Entering a tournament with uncertainties and emerging with a medal is truly gratifying.”
