A deceitful husband falsely claimed that his wife had stabbed herself to death, telling emergency services that “My wife’s got a knife in her tummy.” Mohamed Samak, a hockey coach, denied murdering his wife Joanne, alleging that he found her stabbing herself in their Droitwich Spa home in July last year. Prosecutors contended that Samak, a former Egyptian international hockey player and Wales under-18s coach, murdered his wife due to his interest in another woman and financial difficulties.
During the trial, Samak asserted that his wife took her own life and had been battling alcohol and mental health issues, but her loved ones disputed these claims, stating that they had no concerns about her mental state or drinking habits. Joanne, who was the primary provider for the family, sustained six stab wounds to her chest and stomach, ranging from 2.5cm to 10cm in depth.
Evidence presented in court suggested that Joanne could have survived for 20 to 30 minutes following the attack. Samak initially lied to emergency services out of panic, claiming he found his wife with a knife in her stomach. The jury at Worcester Crown Court noted that significant force would have been required to break Joanne’s breastbone, making it improbable that she inflicted the fatal injury herself.
After a retrial, Samak was convicted of murder by the jury. This was his second trial, as the initial jury failed to reach a verdict. Police later discovered a bag of blood-soaked clothing in the couple’s home, which played a crucial role in securing Samak’s conviction.
Jonathan Roe from the Crown Prosecution Service stated that Samak’s actions were callous and that his attempt to portray the crime as a suicide had caused additional distress to Jo’s family. Samak is scheduled to be sentenced at the same court tomorrow. The trial revealed that the couple met in Egypt in 2011, married in 2014, and faced challenges in their 10-year marriage, with Samak admitting to rekindling contact with another woman without his wife’s knowledge.
