Mahmood humorously mentioned Pochin’s preference for not seeing another “brown face” on stage and promised to keep her speech brief if Pochin was present.
The comments made by Pochin, a close associate of Nigel Farage, have drawn criticism from thirty-five Members of Parliament who have called for an investigation into a potential breach of the Code of Conduct. Despite branding Pochin’s remarks as “ugly,” Farage has refrained from expelling her from the party.
Following a TalkTV appearance, where Pochin expressed her discomfort with advertisements featuring Black and Asian individuals, Labour MP Dawn Butler has spearheaded efforts to have the standards chief, Daniel Greenberg, look into the matter. Butler emphasized that such statements targeting specific racial groups contradict the principles of integrity, accountability, and respect expected from Members of Parliament.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage expressed his disapproval of Pochin’s comments, labeling them as “ugly,” but clarified that he did not perceive racist intent behind them. Despite facing widespread condemnation, Pochin has not faced disciplinary action within the party. Farage acknowledged the inappropriateness of Pochin’s choice of words and stated that further action would have been taken if racism had been the underlying motivation.
