New horrifying video footage displays the immense power of Hurricane Melissa as it ravaged numerous homes in Jamaica with biblical-strength winds.
Shared by Ground Force Humanitarian Aid on Facebook, the video has garnered over 911,000 views, showcasing one of the most potent storms in history hitting the island.
The video captures the relentless winds pounding a coastal community, with hurricane gales wreaking havoc on streets and hurling debris into the air.
Witnesses in the video observe cars and houses succumbing to floodwaters while locals navigate through chest-deep storm surges amidst the ongoing hurricane.
Following the catastrophic weather event, Jamaican authorities have declared the region a disaster zone, with emergency teams striving to rescue individuals trapped by the floods.
The distressing clip, posted with a somber message from the aid group, states: “We are dispatching our SAFE Camp gear to establish a secure location for teams to coordinate and operate from. Keep us in your thoughts for safety as we venture into the unknown.”
Hurricane Melissa barged in from the Atlantic with winds reaching 185mph, claiming the lives of at least seven individuals, demolishing homes, isolating communities, and triggering extensive flooding.
Despite nearly reaching the title of the strongest storm ever recorded over the Atlantic, the hurricane prompted the Jamaican government to order evacuations from high-risk zones and shut down all airports, urging residents to seek shelter.
The US National Hurricane Center cautioned that the winds at the core of the storm were potent enough to cause “total structural failure.”
While the capital city, Kingston, remained outside the direct path of the hurricane, the streets were deserted as heavy rainfall battered the area and debris flew through the air. Throughout the island, fearful residents sought refuge in churches, schools, and community shelters.
Despite repeated evacuation directives, officials are concerned that many have disregarded the warnings.
Meteorologists predict that Melissa, the most forceful storm in Jamaica’s history, could inflict even greater damage as it heads towards Cuba. Nearly 900,000 residents in Cuba’s eastern provinces have been instructed to evacuate, and the US Navy has relocated approximately 1,000 non-essential personnel from Guantanamo Bay and redirected eight warships away from the hurricane’s trajectory.
The United Nations World Food Programme has prepositioned 450 metric tons of emergency food provisions in neighboring Haiti, acknowledging that this amount is only a fraction of the typical requirement.
