Lando Norris asserted his determination to win after delivering an outstanding performance to secure pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix. The McLaren driver dominated the qualifying session while his Formula 1 championship rivals struggled to make an impact.
Despite his strong showing, Norris is wary of the Ferrari cars starting directly behind him. The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit features the longest straight leading into the first corner, providing opportunities for those in second and third positions to capitalize on slipstream advantages and challenge the pole-sitter.
Charles Leclerc showcased impressive speed in Q3, securing a front-row start alongside Norris, with Lewis Hamilton completing the top three grid positions for his best qualifying performance of the season. This sets Hamilton up for a potential breakthrough podium finish as a Ferrari driver, a milestone he has been striving to achieve after 19 Grand Prix appearances, setting a record for the team.
In a surprising turn of events, Max Verstappen of Red Bull could not find the pace he needed and settled for fifth place on the grid. George Russell in the Mercedes outperformed Verstappen, while championship leader Oscar Piastri qualified in eighth but moved up to seventh due to Carlos Sainz’s grid penalty.
Sainz’s penalty, carried over from the previous United States Grand Prix, was a result of a collision with Kimi Antonelli. Sainz’s position drops from seventh to 12th on the starting grid, but he still maintains a lead over his teammate Alex Albon, who was eliminated in Q1.
British driver Oliver Bearman continued his impressive form with a third consecutive appearance in Q3 for Haas, starting ninth. Yuki Tsunoda also benefitted from Sainz’s penalty, moving up to 10th place after narrowly missing out on a Q3 spot.
