An innovative skin cancer treatment that combines immunotherapy with mRNA vaccine technology has shown promising outcomes in a recent advanced trial, as stated by pharmaceutical giants Merck and Moderna in an official announcement on Wednesday.
The new treatment, known as intismeran, outperformed standard immunotherapy in diminishing melanoma recurrence and inhibiting cancer spread to other areas of the body among patients who had prior melanoma surgery, the companies reported.
The disclosed results of the treatment, intismeran, highlighted “statistically significant and clinically meaningful enhancements.” However, medical professionals have cautiously welcomed the news, pointing out that the Phase 3 trial is still ongoing, and the results shared on Wednesday are from an interim evaluation.
Further data will be presented at an oncology conference and submitted to regulatory bodies, according to the pharmaceutical firms.
Dr. Marcus Butler, a melanoma expert at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, expressed optimism about the development, noting that positive outcomes in a larger Phase 3 trial following encouraging results in a smaller Phase 2 study signify progress in skin cancer treatment.
Despite the positive outlook, the timeline for making the treatment available in Canada is anticipated to be over eight months away once the final trial data confirm the achieved results, explained Dr. Ramy Saleh from McGill University in Montreal.

The cost implications, as well as public and governmental support for the treatment, also raise critical questions, particularly considering the significant impact of melanoma in Canada, with thousands of new cases diagnosed annually and a substantial number of fatalities attributed to the disease.
The treatment regimen integrates Merck’s immunotherapy drug Keytruda with a customized mRNA vaccine from Moderna, tailored to target mutations identified in patients’ tumor samples. This dual approach aims to activate the immune system by removing inhibitory mechanisms and training the body to recognize and combat cancer cells carrying specific antigens.
While the trial involved over a thousand high-risk melanoma patients who had undergone tumor removal surgery, concerns regarding the immune-stimulating effects of mRNA vaccines in general were raised, potentially confounding the study results. Ongoing clinical trials are exploring the treatment’s efficacy in later-stage melanoma cases, as past research has yielded mixed outcomes.
